Profile of Kath Abbot

Kat, Kit-Kat, Kat-Kat—she goes by many names, but at the end of the day she’s Kath Abbot, a 21 year old writer-illustrator at the Ateneo de Manila University. Gifted with a knack for giving life to her stories through her drawings, she is working hard to supplement her illustrations with her own brand of literary storytelling.

Kath grew up with a passion for drawing, and a wealth of inspiration everywhere she went. As a young girl, she was inspired by the stories she dreamed up in her head and her own experiences: particularly her first encounter with a snake. As she grew older, she committed to further developing her craft: she learned about different drawing techniques and styles in school, and eventually sought out a mentor who could teach her how to draw faces.

Her journey as a writer and an illustrator began in her teenage years, when she began her foray into different kinds of literature. As a teenager, she grew more interested in the works of Edgar Allan Poe and various fanfiction writers—while she drew visual inspiration from anime such as Shakugan no Shana and Shaman King.

When it was time for her to go to university, she initially considered pursuing her talent in visual arts elsewhere. Eventually, she chose to develop her skills in creative writing, while honing her skills as an illustrator through semi-realistic doodles as a form of stress relief. “Everyone has their stress balls; my stress ball is drawing!”

Kath continues to learn and grow as an artist in the hopes of someday making her mark in the realm of literary and visual arts. As she draws inspiration from the comics she reads and steadily develops her semi-realistic drawing style, Kath hopes to someday produce a visual novel featuring her own stories and illustrations.
